Trainspotting is a 1996 film directed by Danny Boyle.

"Chose life. Choose and job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a ******* big television. Choose washing machines, cars, compact disk players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol and dental insurance..." - Renton (Ewan McGregor) - Opening Line.

Trainspotting is a revolutionary, BAFTA winning movie, which I have watched many times and have never failed to be captivated by its intense, slice of life story. The black comedy is based on a 1993 novel by Irvine Welsh. It follows Renton (played by Ewan McGregor) and his battle against a heroin addiction, violent acquaintances and other challenges his life throws at him.

One aspect of the film that I find fantastic and is a large reason as to why it is my favourite movie is the cinematography of the film. Danny Boyle and his team were able to create an aesthetically pleasing, captivating film using interesting shots which really bring the story to life and reflect the crazy life of the charaters. The type of shots that really makes Trainspotting stand out include Dutch rolling shots, and POV shots that allows the audience to really connect to the struggles the characters face as they are experiencing with-drawl symptoms.

Another thing that makes Trainspotting stand out is the momentary narration that is heard throughout the play, giving the audience a direct viewpoint into the min charaters head and mental state. One example of this is the first few lines of the movie, "Chose life. Choose and job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a ******* big television. Choose washing machines, cars, compact disk players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol and dental insurance..." - Renton (Ewan McGregor), this gives the audience a clear message of the mains outlook on life, suggesting that he sees life as a continuous cycle of boring daily tasks and missions to feel accomplished in todays society. I believe these little snippets of narration are a very important and effective way of helping the audience understand the charaters and therefore the story to a greater extent. As most people are not heroin addicts/ robbers/ criminals most of the audience may not be able to relate to the story, but these bits of narration lays out the charaters thinking in a direct, concise format.

Overall, I think Trainspotting is an incredible movie that deserves all the awards and recognition it has gained since its release. It is a movie with it all, great cinematography, a new outlook on life on top of raising awareness for a cause and giving ts audience a greater understanding of others lives.
