Here I will analyse small part of both "Singing in the Rain" and "A Clockwork Orange" sound, and how it effect the audience.
"Singing in the Rain" "The Duelling Caviller"
There is a lot of ambient, diegetic sound added to the first few shots of the clip, these sounds set the scene form the audience and really submerges them into the movie and setting. The traffic and rain are examples of these ambient sounds, they depict a city scene in an effective way due to the hustle and bustle of the overlapping hectic sounds.
This part of the movie is also very interesting as it shows a movie with in a movie. With in which shows a lot of non-purposeful mistakes that cause the audience to criticize and laugh at the movie being shown. These mistakes include non- synchronisation, sound imbalance/ overbearing ambient sound and actors voices not being picked up when thy are speaking. These mistakes and more importantly the fake audience reactions, which include laughing and shouting, creates a comedic scene for the real life audience to react too.
This scene from A Clockwork Orange is very contrapuntal, causing a conflict to happen in the mind of the audience. The non-diegetic, calming classical music contrasted to the violent scene of supposed friends fighting each other (quite violently) produces a jarring, unsettling, unnatural feel for the audience, as these two things are not normally things you would fit together in a realistic setting. This disturbing nature also adds to the dystopian nature of the whole film and more specifically the perhaps twisted mind of the main character.
The juxtaposition of themes also confuses the audience, reflecting the possible emotions of the unexpecting gang members at their sudden attack from an ally.
