'Sin City' - 2005 Quentin Tarantino

In sin city, the director uses black and white film to give the movie a 'film noir' sense, this is the most obvious difference between 'Sin City' ad 'Fish Tank'. The black and white adds a sense of nostalgia as it makes the film feel dated. The women torturing the men are also very glamorous, they have full hair and makeup, again giving a sense of nostalgia as this was often seen in older movies.

One of the most interesting parts if this movie is the pop of colour of the mans blood. The saturated red draws the audiences eye into the blood, which would have been very effective in giving the blood a certain importance. Another pop of colour seen I the film is the blue colour in one of the woman's eyes. This difference suggests to the audience that the woman is of importance and is someone that may alter the movie. The colour blue also signifies a purity to the character, perhaps suggesting that the woman is someone to be trusted.

Four point lighting is used in this scene very effectively, the lighting brings the shots too life separating the charaters from the background but still creating a all around well fitted scene. The lighting is also low, giving the entire film a dark, gothic feel, which combined with the dark clothing of the charaters and room suggests something sinister or secret is occurring.

'Fish Tank' -

I personally believe that the scene in 'Fish Tank' is very effective in showing the audience an insight into the life and mindset of the main character. The first thing would like to mention is the environment the scene is set in. The setting seems to be a council housing estate, suggesting to the audience that the charaters is from a working class background. The colour palette seems to be quite plain or dim. This may be a way of representing the main character and her through the visual aspects of her environment, suggesting that the characters life may lack excitement or purpose and perhaps suggest the charaters is depressed or isolated.

Another thing with in the sequence that adds to the suggested theme of is the way the main character is framed. Within the shot we are introduced to her with she is the sole character with in the shot. She also takes up the majority of the screen with in the first shot, suggesting she may feel trapped with in her environment. This is brought to the audiences attention via the chosen cinematography of the shot as she is trapped with in the shot itself.
